What to Expect

Surgical Technologists (Surgical Techs) assist in operating rooms by preparing surgical instruments, maintaining sterile environments, and supporting surgeons during procedures. They play a critical role in ensuring patient safety, managing surgical supplies, and anticipating the needs of the surgical team. Surgical Techs work in hospitals, outpatient surgical centers, and specialty practices.

Certifications

Surgical Techs typically require the following certifications:

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) – through NBSTSA

Education

Surgical Techs must complete an accredited surgical technology program, which may lead to a certificate, diploma, or associate degree. After graduation, most pursue the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Some states may require additional licensing or continuing education.

Responsibilities

Surgical Techs have the following responsibilities:

• Set up the operating room and sterilize instruments and supplies
• Pass instruments and assist surgeons during procedures
