Certifications

Oncology nurses typically require the following certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) – highly recommended or required

Education

Oncology nurses must earn an Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ADN or BSN) from an accredited program and pass the NCLEX-RN to obtain licensure. Experience in medical-surgical or hematology/oncology units is typically preferred. Many pursue OCN certification after gaining clinical oncology experience to demonstrate specialized knowledge.
