What to Expect

Stepdown nurses provide care for patients who are transitioning from the ICU but still require close monitoring. They assess and monitor patients, manage IV drips and ventilators, respond to changes in condition, and collaborate with healthcare teams to ensure safe recovery. Common cases include post-surgical patients, cardiac conditions, respiratory complications, and those requiring continuous monitoring.

Certifications

Stepdown nurses typically require the following certifications:

• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
• Basic Life Support (BLS)

Education

Stepdown nurses must have an ADN or a BSN from an accredited institution. A BSN, which takes approximately four years, is often preferred and may provide more career opportunities and higher earning potential. Many new graduate nurses enter Stepdown units through residency programs that offer specialized training and mentorship.
