California RN License Guide
California is one of the most popular destinations for nurses, but it has its own unique licensing rules and timelines. The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) manages all applications, renewals, and verifications for RNs. Because the state does not participate in the Nurse Licensure Compact, you’ll need to secure a California-specific license before you can legally practice—whether you’re relocating or working a temporary assignment.
This guide explains everything you need to know, including how to apply for licensure by endorsement, how to renew your California RN license, required continuing education, fingerprinting procedures, and what happens if your license expires.

California Nursing License Renewal
Renewal Timeline
California RN licenses are renewed every two years, and your expiration date is set for the end of the month after your birth month. Renewal opens in your BreEZe account approximately 90 days before your license expires.
- Renewal: Every 2 years if held in "Active" status
- Renewal deadline: Last day of the month following your birth month
- California does not offer a grace period to keep practicing
Renewal Requirements
California does not offer a grace period — if you do not renew by the deadline, your license becomes delinquent and you cannot work until it is renewed.
- Maintain an active, unencumbered California RN License
- Complete 30 hours of BRN-approved continuing education
- Submit renewal application and payment through the BreEZe system
- Complete fingerprinting if requested (for nurses renewing to active status who do not have fingerprints on file)
Continuing Education Requirements
California requires 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years.
- Courses must be from BRN-approved CE providers
- CE must be completed within the renewal cycle
- 1-hour implicit bias training required within the first renewal period (new licensees only)
- CE certificates must be retained for at least 4 years for audit purposes
Nurses renewing for the first time who were licensed less than 2 years may be exempt from the 30-hour CE requirement (except implicit bias requirement)
How to Renew California RN License
- Log into your BreEZe online account
- Select your RN license and choose the “Renew” option.
- Complete questions about CE, background/fingerprints (if required), and any change of personal information.
- Enter/verify CE provider and hours completed.
- Pay the renewal fee online.
- Submit and allow processing; many straightforward renewals are cleared in a few business days if no deficiencies. If you submit by the expiration date, you may continue practicing while processing is underway.
Renewal Fee: $190
Delinquent Fee: $280 (if renewing after expiration)
Late Renewal / Lapsed Licenses
If you let your license lapse (delinquent status) less than eight years: you must submit renewal fee + 30 CE hours completed within past 2 years + fingerprints/background check as applicable.
If the license has been lapsed more than eight years: you’ll need the above plus either a current valid RN license in another state/territory/Canada or pass the RN licensing exam again
California Nursing License by Endorsement
What is Endorsement?
If you hold a current, active RN license in another U.S. state or Canadian province, you can apply for a California RN license by endorsement. Because California is not a compact state, even nurses with multistate licenses must apply for a California license before practicing in the state.
Who Qualifies?
You may apply for a California RN license by endorsement if you:
- Hold an active, unencumbered RN license in one or more other U.S. states/territories or Canada.
- Graduated from a nursing education program that meets California’s standards.
- Passed the NCLEX-RN or acceptable equivalent exam
- Meet fingerprinting and background check requirements
What You’ll Need (documents & verifications)
- Online application through the BreEZe portal

- Proof of U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) or ITIN
- Proof of identity and citizenship/immigration status (if requested)
- Name-change documents (marriage license, court order, etc., if applicable)
