What to Expect

Echo Techs perform echocardiograms using ultrasound technology to capture images of the heart’s chambers, valves, and blood flow. These diagnostic studies help cardiologists detect and evaluate heart conditions such as murmurs, valve disease, or cardiomyopathy. Echo Techs work in hospitals, cardiology clinics, and diagnostic imaging centers.

Certifications

Echo Techs typically require the following certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) – through ARDMS or CCI

Education

Echo Techs must complete an accredited cardiac sonography or diagnostic medical sonography program, which may result in a certificate, associate, or bachelor’s degree. After graduation, certification as an RDCS (Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer) is typically required and demonstrates competency in cardiac imaging. Continuing education is often needed to maintain certification.

Responsibilities

Echo Techs have the following responsibilities:

  • Perform transthoracic, stress, and sometimes transesophageal echocardiograms
  • Capture high-quality cardiac images using ultrasound equipment
  • Work closely with cardiologists to assist in diagnosing heart conditions
  • Explain procedures to patients and monitor them throughout the exam
  • Maintain imaging equipment and follow safety and quality standards
