What to Expect

Orthopedic Nurses specialize in caring for patients with musculoskeletal conditions such as fractures, joint replacements, arthritis, and spinal injuries. They assist with pre- and post-operative care, manage pain, support mobility and rehabilitation, and educate patients on recovery and injury prevention. Orthopedic Nurses work in hospitals, surgical centers, rehab facilities, and outpatient clinics.

Certifications

Orthopedic Nurses typically require the following certifications:

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Orthopaedic Nurse Certified (ONC) – preferred or required for many roles

Education

Orthopedic Nurses must earn an Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ADN or BSN) and pass the NCLEX-RN to obtain licensure. Many nurses gain experience in surgical, med-surg, or rehab settings before specializing in orthopedics. The ONC certification, offered through the Orthopaedic Nurses Certification Board (ONCB), demonstrates advanced orthopedic knowledge and skills.
