Michigan Nursing License

With the support of Advantis’ dedicated licensing team and established state connections, many clinicians are able to secure their Michigan nursing license in as little as 1–2 weeks, significantly faster than the typical processing timeframe.

Michigan Nursing License Guide

Obtaining a Michigan nursing license requires navigating specific state rules because Michigan is not part of the Nurse Licensure Compact. Every clinician headed to Michigan must secure a single-state license before practicing in populare spots like Detroit or Grand Rapids. A common bottleneck occurs during fingerprinting, where applicants must wait for a LARA-issued request form and Unique ID (UID) before scheduling a background check to avoid delays.

This guide outlines the exact steps to meet the Michigan Board of Nursing requirements quickly. You will find clear instructions for the MiPLUS portal, endorsement pathways, renewal deadlines, and unique continuing education mandates like implicit bias training. Using this regulatory guidance ensures you clear processing hurdles and start your assignment on time.

Michigan Nursing License for Travel Nurses

Michigan Temporary Nursing License

Travel Nursing in Michigan

Michigan is not a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact, meaning travel nurses must obtain a single-state Michigan nursing license before starting an assignment. Even nurses holding an active multistate compact license from another jurisdiction cannot practice in Michigan without completing the endorsement process. This requirement often catches travelers off guard when planning contracts in healthcare hubs like Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Ann Arbor. Most travelers apply via endorsement, which involves submitting the MiPLUS application, completing the mandatory human trafficking training, and verifying existing licenses through Nursys. If you relocate permanently and establish Michigan as your primary residence, you must maintain this active single-state license to continue practicing. Wait times heavily depend on fingerprinting and transcript processing speeds. Initiate your application early to avoid pushing back your contract start date.

Pro Tip for Travelers: Michigan fingerprinting cannot be completed until after you submit your MiPLUS application and receive the official fingerprint request form containing your Unique ID (UID). Scheduling fingerprinting before receiving this form prevents the results from linking to your application and requires you to repeat the process and pay the fee twice.

Michigan Nursing License FAQs

How do I renew my Michigan nursing license?

Renew your Michigan nursing license through the MiPLUS online portal. Michigan licenses renew every two years by March 31. To complete renewal, you must attest to completing 25 contact hours of continuing education and pay the $131 renewal fee.

What are the Michigan nursing license continuing education requirements?

Michigan requires 25 contact hours of continuing education every two years. This must include two hours of pain and pain symptom management and two hours of implicit bias training. Nurses must also complete a one-time one-hour training on identifying victims of human trafficking, which does not count toward the 25 CE hours.

Is Michigan a compact state for nursing licenses?

No. Michigan is not part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Nurses must obtain a Michigan single-state nursing license before practicing in the state, even if they hold a multistate license elsewhere.

How long does it take to get a Michigan nursing license by endorsement?

Michigan endorsement applications are typically processed in four to eight weeks after the Board receives all required documents, including transcripts, license verification, and fingerprint results.

When does a Michigan nursing license expire?

Michigan RN and LPN licenses expire March 31st every two years. The state provides a 60-day late renewal window, allowing nurses to renew by paying a $20 late fee without completing the full relicensure process.

Does Michigan issue temporary nursing licenses?

Yes. Michigan may issue a temporary nursing license to qualified endorsement applicants who hold an active RN license in another jurisdiction. Temporary license holders must practice under the supervision of a fully licensed RN while the Board reviews the permanent application.
