Dahlonega, GA sits at the site of America's first major gold rush, which began in 1828 and gave the Lumpkin County seat its early fortune and a former branch of the U.S. Mint. Day to day, therapy centers and hospital labs take on much of the allied caseload in this Blue Ridge mountain town, about sixty-five miles north of Atlanta. GA-400 ends near here and runs south to Atlanta. It is the route most travelers take for major flights and the major hospitals. The University of North Georgia anchors the historic square, and the surrounding plateau has become the heart of Georgia wine country. Cooler mountain summers and a busy fall festival season shape the local calendar. The drive south is the main link to big-city services.
