Twenty-two miles west of I-35 in southwest Iowa, Mt Ayr, IA is the small seat of Ringgold County, named for the Scottish birthplace of poet Robert Burns. Hospital imaging departments and hospital labs carry a modest share of the allied caseload at the county hospital that serves this rural community. US-169 and State Highway 2 meet in town, with Highway 2 running east to the interstate. Ringgold is one of the least populated counties in the state. The patient base is small and spread across farm country. Des Moines is about eighty-five miles northeast, the usual drive for specialty care and a major airport. A 1927 courthouse stands at the heart of the square.
