Roughly halfway between Springfield and St. Louis on old Route 66, Carlinville, IL serves as the seat of Macoupin County, built around a town square and a courthouse so costly it earned the name the Million Dollar Courthouse. Day to day, therapy centers and diagnostic labs account for a notable cut of the allied demand in this small central Illinois city. Illinois Route 4 runs north to Springfield, and Route 108 heads east about twelve miles to I-55, the main Chicago-to-St. Louis corridor. St. Louis is roughly an hour southwest for a major airport and the larger hospitals. The Standard Addition neighborhood holds one of the country's largest groups of Sears mail-order homes, and Blackburn College adds a small student population. Amtrak's Lincoln Service still stops in town.
