Wabash College gives Crawfordsville, IN a college-town character, drawing students to this Montgomery County seat on Sugar Creek in west-central Indiana. Outpatient therapy and hospital lab work make up much of the local contract base across the city, the largest in the county. I-74 crosses just south of downtown, with US-231 running north and south and US-136 heading east toward Indianapolis. Indianapolis is about forty-five miles southeast for a major airport and the larger hospitals, while Lafayette sits roughly thirty miles north. Long called the Athens of Indiana, the town was home to Lew Wallace, who wrote Ben-Hur here. Sugar Creek and the nearby state parks give the area plenty of room for canoeing and hiking.
