Explore Vicksburg, MS

Besieged for forty-seven days before it fell on July 4, 1863, Vicksburg, MS marks one of the Civil War's turning points on the Mississippi bluffs. Hospital imaging departments and operating rooms cover much of the allied workload in this Warren County seat of about twenty-one thousand. Interstate 20 crosses the river west into Louisiana and runs east forty miles to Jackson, the state capital. US-61, the old Blues Highway, heads north toward the Delta and south toward Natchez. The Interstate 20 bridge here is one of the few Mississippi crossings in the region, which keeps through-traffic moving. A national military park rings part of the city, and riverboat casinos line the waterfront. Jackson lies a short drive east for larger hospitals and the region's main airport.
