Santa Fe, NM handles hospital coverage for much of northern New Mexico, with patients arriving from mountain and pueblo communities well beyond the city itself. Operating rooms and emergency departments generate most of the travel demand. The city sits at about 7,000 feet, and new arrivals usually need several days before the altitude stops registering on a flight of stairs. Espanola and Los Alamos lie a half hour north, while Albuquerque and its airport are an hour south on I-25. Housing runs expensive near the Plaza, so travelers often look to the south side or Eldorado to keep rents workable. The Sangre de Cristo trailheads begin just above the city's east side.
