Each spring, snow geese pass over Mound City, MO by the hundreds of thousands, drawn to the Loess Bluffs refuge just south of town in northwest Missouri's Holt County. Lab work and outpatient rehab anchor the local assignments in this community of about a thousand at the interchange of Interstate 29 and Route 118. US-59 runs through as well, and St. Joseph lies about thirty miles south along I-29 for larger hospitals, with Kansas City and Omaha each roughly a hundred miles out. Farmland surrounds the wildlife refuge, where bald eagles winter and birders gather during the fall and spring migrations. The seasonal influx of visitors and hunters lifts traffic through the area for a few weeks at a time.
