Aviation began in a Dayton, OH bicycle shop, and the city wears that legacy everywhere it can, from the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, free and vast out on the base's edge, to the preserved Wright sites scattered downtown. The hospital market covers the Miami Valley with depth, keeping emergency, intensive care, and surgical contracts in rotation. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base shapes both the economy and the patient mix. Housing costs run among the gentlest of any metro this size. The Oregon District's brick blocks hold the nightlife, the region's vast paved-trail network starts from downtown's rivers, and Cincinnati and Columbus each wait about an hour away in opposite directions whenever a contract weekend calls for a second city.
