What to Expect

Certifications

CVICU nurses typically require the following certifications:

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
• Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) – often preferred or required
• Cardiac Surgery Certification (CSC) – optional but beneficial for advanced roles

Education

CVICU nurses must earn an Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ADN or BSN) from an accredited nursing program. After passing the NCLEX-RN and obtaining licensure, nurses typically need ICU or cardiac care experience. Responsibilities

CVICU nurses have the following responsibilities:

• Operate and manage life-support systems such as ventilators and intra-aortic balloon pumps
• Respond to emergencies and perform life-saving interventions
• Collaborate with cardiac surgeons, intensivists, and interdisciplinary teams
