What to Expect

CVOR nurses are specialized surgical nurses who assist in cardiovascular procedures such as open-heart surgery, bypasses, valve replacements, and other thoracic surgeries. They play a critical role in preparing the operating room, maintaining a sterile environment, assisting surgeons during procedures, and ensuring patient safety before, during, and after surgery.

Certifications

CVOR nurses typically require the following certifications:

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
• CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room) – preferred or required for many CVOR roles
• Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) Certifications – optional but beneficial

Education

CVOR nurses must earn an Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ADN or BSN) from an accredited program and pass the NCLEX-RN to become licensed. Specialized training in perioperative nursing and cardiovascular care is typically required, along with ongoing continuing education to maintain certifications and stay current with surgical advancements.
