On Thunder Bay along the Lake Huron shore, Alpena, MI is the county seat for Alpena County in the northeastern Lower Peninsula. Hospital imaging departments and outpatient surgery centers carry much of the allied volume in this city of about ten thousand. US-23 follows the shoreline north toward Mackinaw City and south toward Bay City, while M-32 heads west to Gaylord and Interstate 75. As by far the largest community in sparsely settled northeast Michigan, Alpena serves as its regional medical and commercial center. The Thunder Bay River runs through downtown, and a national marine sanctuary protects nearly two hundred shipwrecks just offshore. Cement and limestone have long anchored the local economy here.
