Explore Sault Ste. Marie, MI

At the top of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Sault Ste. Marie, MI watches freighters climb the Soo Locks between Lake Superior and the lower lakes, and its hospital covers a vast, thinly settled region. Traveling nurses here take on emergency and inpatient assignments with the broad scope rural northern medicine demands. Winter is the defining season; lake-effect snow and deep cold shape commutes, schedules, and gear lists, so cold-month travelers should arrive prepared. Renting stays inexpensive and close to everything. The St. Marys River fills the warm months with kayaking and fishing, and the locks themselves, with an observation platform downtown, remain interesting long after the first viewing. Canada sits directly across the International Bridge for a passport-stamp afternoon.
