NBCOT reports that initial certification is required for occupational therapy state regulation in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Which Occupational Therapy Continuing Education Credits Count
Occupational therapy continuing education credits are not labeled the same way everywhere. Each track uses its own units.
NBCOT requires 36 units per renewal cycle and allows a combination of professional development units, or PDUs, and competency assessment units, or CAUs. PDUs can come from accepted activity types such as education, presentations, publications, and professional service. CAUs come from NBCOT competency-assessment activities. Use the current NBCOT activities chart to see how each activity is valued and whether a limit applies.
State boards use their own terms and totals. Depending on the license, you may see contact hours, CE hours, continuing-competence points, or other units. Massachusetts requires 24 continuing-competence points per biennial renewal period, while Oregon uses a 30-point requirement unless current NBCOT certification satisfies the general CE requirement. New York uses 36 hours of continuing competency during each three-year registration cycle.

When One OT Course Counts Toward Both
One eligible activity may serve both renewal tracks. NBCOT specifically says certificants do not need to duplicate professional development for certification and state licensure. The state still decides what satisfies its license requirements, and NBCOT's activities chart determines how the activity counts toward certification.
NBCOT currently lists 11 states that accept current certification as an option for fulfilling state licensure continuing education requirements: Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Vermont. NBCOT also reports that units earned through its Navigator tools are accepted by 48 states plus the District of Columbia for licensure renewal.
The details still vary by state. Maryland recognizes current NBCOT certification as satisfying its 24-hour continuing-competency requirement. Oregon allows current NBCOT certification to satisfy its general 30-point CE requirement, but the separate pain-management module and cultural-competency hour are still required. South Carolina requires 16 hours of CE and certification in good standing with NBCOT or another board-approved certification program.
Online OT Continuing Education: What Counts
Many continuing ed courses for occupational therapy are available online, but online delivery by itself does not determine whether a course counts. States may classify live webinars, recorded courses, and home study differently, and those categories can carry different limits.
The key is how your board defines the format. Florida, for example, counts real-time online courses that allow interaction with the instructor as live education. For most renewals, at least 14 of Florida's 26 hours must be live or interactive, while home study is limited to 12 hours.
For NBCOT certification, focus on whether the activity fits a category on the current activities chart and how many units that category earns.
How to Choose Continuing Ed Courses for Occupational Therapy
No single provider or subscription is right for every OT. Before you pay, compare the course against the requirements you actually need to meet.
Look for required providers, subject rules, or approval pathways that apply to your license.
Save documentation that clearly shows the activity, provider, completion date, and credit awarded.
Some boards use a tracking system, while others rely on your renewal attestation and audit records.
A recorded course will not replace a live or interactive hour when your state specifically requires one.

Free OT CEUs and Low-Cost Options
Free CEUs for OT can help lower the cost of renewal. You may find a free occupational therapy CEU through professional associations, public agencies, employers, or education providers, and some sites group occupational therapy free CEU courses in one library. The price does not determine whether the credit counts. What matters is whether the activity meets the rule for your license and gives you the documentation you need.
Use free courses where they fit, but do not assume they will cover every state-specific topic or required format. If your board requires a particular ethics, laws, jurisprudence, trafficking, or other training course, identify that requirement first. Then use free or low-cost options for the remaining education when they meet the same acceptance standards.
How to Plan Your OT CE Cycle
A simple plan early in the cycle can prevent last-minute gaps in hours, topics, or course format.
Write down each license renewal date, your NBCOT renewal year, and any requirement that follows a longer cycle. Washington's health-equity and suicide-prevention requirements are good examples.
State-specific courses are easier to plan when you know about them before the end of the renewal period.
If your state requires live education or limits home study, make sure your completed courses leave enough room to meet that rule.
Keep certificates and credit details together. NBCOT recommends retaining professional development documentation for at least one year after renewal, while state record-retention periods can be longer.
NBCOT encourages certificants to use CE Broker, and OT boards in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee currently use the platform.
Indiana requires no continuing competency when the initial license was valid for less than 12 months. Virginia exempts the first biennial renewal. Florida requires only three hours when the first license was issued during the second half of the biennium.
OT Continuing Education for Travel Therapists
OT continuing education for travel therapists can involve several renewal calendars at once. List every license you plan to keep active, then add your NBCOT certification year. For each state, record the total hours or points, required topics, format limits, and record-retention period. The dates may not line up, which is why one master tracker is more useful than treating each renewal as a separate last-minute task.
Use the spaces between assignments to your advantage. If you know a live webinar, state-specific course, or longer training is coming due, schedule it before the final weeks of the cycle. General coursework can often overlap across licenses, but each board's required topics and deadlines still need their own line in your tracker.

Once the renewal year passes, you must use the reinstatement process instead. As of September 2026, reinstatement costs $125 when certification expired within the last three years and $175 when it has been expired longer. Your OTR credential remains unavailable until certification is restored. Your state license may follow a separate rule, so review its renewal requirements too.
Do all states require continuing education for OT license renewal?
No. State renewal models differ, and some jurisdictions do not use a standard CE-hour requirement. New Jersey is a good example of why the source matters: its current OT regulations do not state a contact-hour total, while the Council's licensing guidance still says continuing education must be completed before renewal. Among the detailed examples on this page, Virginia requires 10 hours per biennial renewal and Kansas requires 40 hours during the preceding 24 months. First-renewal exceptions also vary by state.
Are free OT CEUs accepted for license renewal?
They can be. A free course can count when it meets the same subject, provider, format, and documentation rules that apply to paid education. The safest approach is to identify any state-specific required course first, then use free options for remaining hours when the licensing authority accepts them.
I hold licenses in two states. Do I need separate CEUs for each?
You may be able to apply the same course to both licenses when each state accepts the activity. What does not combine are the renewal dates, required topics, format limits, and recordkeeping rules.
