Nursing CE is learning you complete after nursing school. Continuing education for nurses covers everything from renewal requirements to specialty skills. It may help you renew a license, build a skill, or stay current in your field.
You may see CE, CEU, contact hour, NCPD, or continuing competence. Those terms don't always mean the same thing. ANCC calls this Nursing Continuing Professional Development, or NCPD. It accredits groups that meet its standards.
Nursing Continuing Education Requirements Vary by State
State rules can differ a lot. Some states set a fixed number of hours. Others allow more than one way to show continuing competence. Many also have required topics.

How Different Can State Rules Be?
California requires 30 contact hours every two years for most active RN renewals. Courses must come from a CE provider recognized by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
Texas uses a different model. RNs and LVNs can complete 20 CNE contact hours in their area of practice for a standard two-year cycle. Or they can use a Board-approved national nursing certification. Targeted CE may also apply. Beginning September 1st, 2026, nurses renewing or reactivating a Texas license must document compliance with applicable CE requirements through the CE Module in the Texas Nurse Portal before submitting the application.

Online RN continuing education courses can fit well when you're working shifts or moving between assignments. But online doesn't always mean accepted. A state may still have a required topic, test, live course, or reporting step.
Free vs. Paid Nursing CE
Free nursing continuing education courses can work when they fit your rule and give you valid proof. Free options may come from employers, nursing groups, health systems, public agencies, or CE providers.
Paid CE can be worth it when you need several courses, a state package, pharmacology, better tracking, or a larger library.
How to Check If a Nursing CE Course Will Count
Don't wait until renewal to find out a course missed the mark. A quick check before you pay can save time and money.

ANCC accredits CE providers and approvers. Those organizations, or approved activities, award the contact hours. ANCC accreditation can be useful evidence, but your state still controls renewal. Search the ANCC accredited organization directory.

Do all nurses have the same continuing education requirements?
No. Each nursing regulator sets its own renewal rules. California, for example, requires 30 contact hours every two years for most active RN renewals, while Texas uses a different continuing competency model. Check the current Board rule for your own license.
Do travel nurses need continuing education in every state where they work?
Not always. You need to meet the renewal rules for the licenses you keep. If you have a multistate license, you don't renew a separate license in every Compact state where you work. Any separate single-state license still has its own renewal rules.
Can one nursing CE course count toward more than one state license?
Sometimes. One course may work for more than one license if each regulator accepts it. But a state may have its own required topic, approval rule, or reporting step. Verify the rule for each license before claiming one course in both places.
Are CEUs and contact hours the same thing for nurses?
Not always. Nurses often say 'CEU' when they mean continuing education, but many Boards use contact hours or another unit. ANCC accredits organizations that may award ANCC NCPD contact hours. Follow the unit your own regulator uses instead of converting it yourself.
Does online nursing continuing education count for license renewal?
Often, but not in every case. An online course still has to meet the rule for your license. Confirm who awards the hours, any required topics, and any live, test, or reporting rules before you rely on it for renewal.
Are BLS, ACLS, PALS, and other credentials the same as nursing CE?
No. Those credentials have their own issuers and renewal rules. Some classes tied to them may award nursing contact hours, but that doesn't mean the hours meet every state license rule. Check the course and your Board before you count them.
How early should I review nursing CE before license renewal?
There's no national 90-day rule. Still, checking about 90 days ahead gives you time to find a missing course, finish a required topic, and organize your proof. Your Board's actual renewal deadline always comes first.
