FAQs – PCU Travel Nurse Jobs Near Tucson, AZ

What certifications do travel PCU jobs require?
Most travel PCU jobs require Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Units that care for stroke patients often ask for NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) as well. A Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) credential isn't usually required, but many facilities view it as a plus.
What do facilities require for travel PCU nurses?
Facilities typically want recent progressive care, step-down, or intermediate-care experience with continuous cardiac monitoring, higher-acuity patients, and infusions such as diltiazem, amiodarone, insulin, or heparin. Depending on the unit, post-cath, cardiac, respiratory, or postoperative experience may also matter.
Is PCU the same as step-down or intermediate care?
Often, but not always. PCU, step-down, IMC, and transitional-care labels can describe similar units, but acuity, patient mix, allowed drips, and respiratory support vary by hospital. Compare the actual responsibilities with your experience rather than relying on the unit name alone.
What trauma level is Northwest Medical Center in Tucson?
Northwest Medical Center is an Arizona Department of Health Services-designated Level III Trauma Center. The designation was awarded in December 2025.
What heart and stroke accreditations does Northwest Medical Center hold?
Northwest Medical Center is an ACC-accredited Chest Pain with Primary PCI Center, an Arizona Cardiac Receiving Center, and an HFAP-certified Primary Stroke Center.
What maternity and newborn services are available at Northwest Women's Center?
Northwest Women's Center provides private mother-baby rooms, dedicated obstetrical surgical suites, and a Level IIE special care nursery with 24/7 neonatologist coverage.

Explore Tucson, AZ

Out toward the Sonoran Desert, Tucson, AZ serves southern Arizona from a regional hospital network with a wide rural catchment. Perioperative services and medical-surgical units lean on travel nurses to hold coverage across the metro. Banner University Medical Center Tucson and Tucson Medical Center handle most of that care. Contracts frequently extend into Oro Valley, Marana, and Sahuarita, where clinicians can set up a base with a workable commute. Time away from the floor connects straight to the landscape, and a hike up Sabino Canyon is a common way to recharge after a block of shifts. Summer heat and monsoon storms are the real planning factors, so travelers tend to schedule drives around the weather.
