What certifications do travel PCU jobs require?
Most travel PCU jobs require Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Units that care for stroke patients often ask for NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) as well. A Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) credential isn't usually required, but many facilities view it as a plus.
What do facilities require for travel PCU nurses?
Facilities typically want recent progressive care, step-down, or intermediate-care experience with continuous cardiac monitoring, higher-acuity patients, and infusions such as diltiazem, amiodarone, insulin, or heparin. Depending on the unit, post-cath, cardiac, respiratory, or postoperative experience may also matter.
Is PCU the same as step-down or intermediate care?
Often, but not always. PCU, step-down, IMC, and transitional-care labels can describe similar units, but acuity, patient mix, allowed drips, and respiratory support vary by hospital. Compare the actual responsibilities with your experience rather than relying on the unit name alone.
How would you describe Novant Health New Hanover to a travel RN weighing an assignment?
It's a large regional referral hospital and the only trauma center in southeastern coastal North Carolina, so RNs see the region's most serious injuries plus cardiac, women's, and children's cases.
What trauma designation does Novant Health New Hanover hold?
It's an ACS-verified Level II trauma center — the region's only trauma center — treating more than 3,000 trauma patients a year.
What EHR will travel PCU nurses use at Novant Health New Hanover?
New Hanover uses Epic for electronic health records and clinical documentation. Nurses who have worked in Epic before should already be familiar with many of the basic charting functions and workflows.

The Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic at Wilmington, NC, a port city whose historic riverfront, string of beach towns, and steady population growth keep the regional hospital market in nearly constant need of travelers. Demand spans emergency, intensive care, and surgical roles. A rental search splits among the walkable historic district, the suburban sprawl, and the beach communities; Wrightsville Beach rentals cost most and deliver mornings on the sand, while inland blocks save real money. The USS North Carolina rides at anchor across the river, the boardwalk strings the downtown waterfront together, and Carolina Beach's boardwalk carnival runs all summer. Film crews still work the city regularly, a local industry quirk that travelers tend to notice within their first few weeks in town.
