Through the long mountain winter, snow lingers on the passes around Baker City, OR, a remote county seat in a high valley of eastern Oregon. Allied work here is limited and serves Baker County from the area's imaging centers and physical therapy practices, with the bigger hospitals a drive off. The city sits between the Wallowa and Elkhorn mountains, with I-84 along its eastern edge, US-30 through downtown, and the Powder River running through the center of town. The Blue Mountains and old Oregon Trail country give room to roam on days off. La Grande is about forty-five miles north on I-84, and Boise is two hours southeast for the nearest large airport. Travelers drive everywhere here, and winter weather can slow the mountain routes from fall into spring.
