Occupational Therapist Salary in California
See how a travel occupational therapist salary in California compares with staff wages, then factor in city housing, state taxes, and licensing before choosing an offer.
What Is the Occupational Therapist Salary in California?
California occupational therapists have a median staff wage of $124,510 a year in the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. That is 24.1% above the $100,330 national median. The middle half of California staff wages runs from $103,950 at the 25th percentile to $136,380 at the 75th. These figures cover wage and salary jobs across the state, and while they are useful benchmarks, they do not describe the weekly package on a travel assignment.
What Is the Travel Occupational Therapist Salary in California?
The current California travel OT median is $2,587, drawn from 32 eligible open Advantis assignments with weekly rates from $2,104 to $2,711. Use the chart to see whether the open contracts bunch near the midpoint or spread across the full range. The wider the spread, the less the median tells you about any single job.
Travel OT Pay vs. Staff Occupational Therapist Salary in California
The calculator divides California's staff median by 52 and sets the result against the weekly rate you enter. Use that as a yardstick for the travel figures, since the two kinds of pay aren't built the same way. The annual BLS figure describes wage and salary work across a full year. A contract's posted weekly gross covers its scheduled weeks and may combine a taxable wage with stipends. Weigh the hours, the contract length, the pay components, the benefits, and the reimbursements before you rank the options.

See all jobs inThe staff weekly figure is calculated by dividing the selected state's BLS OEWS May 2025 median annual wage for Occupational Therapists by 52. It is a weekly equivalent for comparison, not an observed or guaranteed weekly staff paycheck. Travel figures use the selected gross weekly rate.
This is a gross-pay comparison only. Travel and staff compensation are structured differently. It does not include taxes, employer-paid benefits, overtime, shift differentials, bonuses, housing or travel expenses, paid or unpaid time off, or time between assignments. Results are for general comparison only and are not job offers, guaranteed earnings, or take-home-pay calculations.
OT Salary in California by City: Highest Current Rates
Each city is ranked by its highest eligible open Advantis rate, so the list shows where the strongest current offer sits rather than what a typical contract there pays. One new assignment can change the leader. The order won't hold still as openings post and fill, so don't read too much into today's top spot.
California OT Salary After Housing and Taxes
California taxes personal income at graduated rates from 1% to 12.3%, and an additional 1% applies to taxable income above $1 million. That creates a maximum marginal rate of 13.3%, which applies only to the highest band, so it is not the rate charged on an occupational therapist's full income. Federal taxes and the traveler's own circumstances shape the result as well.
Rent is the other lever. HUD Fair Market Rents are comparison benchmarks for a standard unfurnished unit with utilities, not quotes for furnished traveler housing. Advantis uses $2,674 a month as its California two-bedroom benchmark. Among the metros on this page, San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara sits at $3,483 and Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario at $2,201, a $1,282 difference, or about $296 a week. BEA's Regional Price Parity index puts California at 110.7 against a U.S. value of 100, so overall prices run 10.7% above the national level.
California OT Licensing at a Glance
California has not enacted the OT Compact. A Compact privilege cannot be used for a California assignment. Travelers apply through the California Board of Occupational Therapy. The fee is $50, fingerprinting is required, and a prorated initial-license fee is billed after approval. The Board lists 3 to 4 weeks for processing. State law lets an applicant work for up to 60 days after filing, on three conditions: no California license application of yours was previously denied, you hold a current, active, nonrestricted license from a state the Board considers at least as stringent, and you work in association with a California-licensed OT. For the full route, see the OT License Center; the OT Compact License Center tracks which states have joined.

Travel OT Pay Packages and Stipends in California
In California the wage-to-stipend split matters twice. The taxable wage portion carries state income tax on top of federal tax. A package can pair taxable wages with housing and meal stipends. Whether those stipends stay out of taxable income depends on your tax home, whether the assignment is temporary, and how the employer pays them.
California taxes wages earned on assignments in the state, including wages paid to nonresidents, at graduated rates; any stipend exclusion depends on the reimbursement arrangement and your circumstances.
How to qualify for tax-free stipends
Stipend eligibility generally depends on three conditions, and documenting them is the traveler’s responsibility, not the agency’s.
- You keep a tax home
- A permanent residence you actually pay for and return to between assignments.
- You’re paying twice
- Covering a place back home and a place near the assignment at the same time.
- The work is temporary
- Generally expected to last a year or less. Assignments expected to run longer, or that stretch on in one area, are typically treated as indefinite.
When these conditions are not met, stipends are generally treated as taxable wages, so the same gross contract amount can leave less after taxes. Individual outcomes depend on facts and circumstances. Read more in our guide to how a tax home works.
Estimate only, to show the shape of the difference. It assumes a 22% federal bracket plus 7.65% in payroll tax on the wage portion; state income tax may change the result. Example figures for illustration, not offers. Many agencies align stipend amounts with U.S. General Services Administration per-diem rates for the assignment locality. Whether any stipend is excluded from your taxable income depends on your own circumstances. General information only, not tax advice.

What Affects a Travel Occupational Therapist Salary in California?
Posted California travel OT rates belong to individual assignments, not to one statewide pay scale. Setting, weekly hours, start timing, and the written cancellation terms all move the number, and so do caseload, productivity expectations, location, and the wage-to-stipend split. There isn't one lever. Home health brings its own checklist: the territory, how many visits a day, mileage, charting time, and whether drive time is paid.
Read the experience and credential requirements on the posting too. The listing won't tell you which of these factors led a facility to set a particular rate, so ask for the complete terms in writing before you decide.
