FAQs – PCU Travel Nurse Jobs Near San Antonio, TX

What certifications do travel PCU jobs require?
Most travel PCU jobs require Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Units that care for stroke patients often ask for NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) as well. A Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) credential isn't usually required, but many facilities view it as a plus.
What do facilities require for travel PCU nurses?
Facilities typically want recent progressive care, step-down, or intermediate-care experience with continuous cardiac monitoring, higher-acuity patients, and infusions such as diltiazem, amiodarone, insulin, or heparin. Depending on the unit, post-cath, cardiac, respiratory, or postoperative experience may also matter.
Is PCU the same as step-down or intermediate care?
Often, but not always. PCU, step-down, IMC, and transitional-care labels can describe similar units, but acuity, patient mix, allowed drips, and respiratory support vary by hospital. Compare the actual responsibilities with your experience rather than relying on the unit name alone.
What kind of high-acuity nursing experience is available at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio?
Methodist Hospital combines adult emergency care with advanced neuroscience, cardiac and transplant surgery, burn care, and complex maternity services. Travelers may work with critically ill medical, surgical, neurological, or high-risk obstetric patients.
What should neuro travelers know about Methodist Hospital?
Neuroscience services include stroke, brain hemorrhage, tumors, epilepsy, spine trauma, neurocritical care, neurointerventional procedures, and dedicated neurosurgical operating rooms. Neuro and ICU travelers may see patients requiring both procedural treatment and prolonged critical monitoring.
Which specialty programs may be especially relevant for surgical and critical-care travelers?
The hospital supports heart transplant and cardiovascular surgery, colorectal and thoracic procedures, orthopedics, urology, and a dedicated burn and reconstructive center. These programs create a diverse postoperative and critical-care population.

Explore San Antonio, TX

At the heart of a broad clinical network across south-central Texas sits San Antonio, TX. Methodist Hospital and University Health anchor much of the metro's inpatient care, and recurring coverage keeps travelers in surgical suites and labor-and-delivery units across the city. Assignments frequently extend into Schertz, Cibolo, and New Braunfels, which make practical residential bases. VIA buses can help with some central trips, though the metro's spread means most assignments still come down to a drive. Time off tends to revolve around the River Walk, where the pace slows and the dining and the river paths are easy. Beyond it, the missions and the Pearl district give a quieter option on a full day off.
