This PCU travel nurse job in Burlington, North Carolina, with Advantis Medical is a 13-week Travel PCU Registered Nurse (RN) contract at Cone Health - Alamance Regional Medical Center. This role follows a Nights shift with a 3x12 schedule.
In this PCU travel nursing job, you will provide progressive care in a hospital setting, assess and monitor patient conditions, support urgent interventions, document care accurately, and collaborate with physicians and the clinical care team during fast-moving patient situations.

Responsibilities
- Manage higher-acuity patients stepping down from intensive care who require close monitoring
- Monitor continuous telemetry and hemodynamic status, recognizing and escalating changes promptly
- Administer medications and IV therapy, including titratable drips approved for the unit, per facility protocol
- Care for patients on high-flow oxygen and non-invasive ventilation when assigned
Travel PCU Requirements:
- 2+ years of recent PCU experience.
- Must hold all required certifications and licenses as mandated by North Carolina and national regulatory bodies.
What certifications do travel PCU jobs require?
Most travel PCU jobs require Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Units that care for stroke patients often ask for NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) as well. A Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) credential isn't usually required, but many facilities view it as a plus.
What do facilities require for travel PCU nurses?
Facilities typically want recent progressive care, step-down, or intermediate-care experience with continuous cardiac monitoring, higher-acuity patients, and infusions such as diltiazem, amiodarone, insulin, or heparin. Depending on the unit, post-cath, cardiac, respiratory, or postoperative experience may also matter.
Is PCU the same as step-down or intermediate care?
Often, but not always. PCU, step-down, IMC, and transitional-care labels can describe similar units, but acuity, patient mix, allowed drips, and respiratory support vary by hospital. Compare the actual responsibilities with your experience rather than relying on the unit name alone.
