FAQs – PCU Travel Nurse Jobs Near Albany, NY

What certifications do travel PCU jobs require?
Most travel PCU jobs require Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Units that care for stroke patients often ask for NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) as well. A Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) credential isn't usually required, but many facilities view it as a plus.
What do facilities require for travel PCU nurses?
Facilities typically want recent progressive care, step-down, or intermediate-care experience with continuous cardiac monitoring, higher-acuity patients, and infusions such as diltiazem, amiodarone, insulin, or heparin. Depending on the unit, post-cath, cardiac, respiratory, or postoperative experience may also matter.
Is PCU the same as step-down or intermediate care?
Often, but not always. PCU, step-down, IMC, and transitional-care labels can describe similar units, but acuity, patient mix, allowed drips, and respiratory support vary by hospital. Compare the actual responsibilities with your experience rather than relying on the unit name alone.
What's the trauma and academic setting like for travel nurses at Albany Medical Center in Albany?
Northeastern New York's only Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and only academic medical center, Albany Medical Center runs an emergency department seeing more than 75,000 visits a year.
What critical-care and stroke acuity will travel nurses find at Albany Medical Center?
It's a DNV-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center with a dedicated Neuro ICU. Travelers may also see medical, surgical, vascular, and cardiothoracic critical care, and the hospital charts on Epic.
What neonatal and pediatric care does Albany Med offer travel nurses?
A Level IV NICU and the Regional Perinatal Center for northeastern New York pair with the Bernard & Millie Duker Children's Hospital on campus.

Critical-care and med-surg floors cover patients from well beyond the city limits, across several campuses. Travelers reviewing assignments often see contracts extending into Troy, Schenectady, and Cohoes, where housing comes easier than downtown, and many favor a base near the Northway for a quick run into the city.
