FAQs – PCU Travel Nurse Jobs Near Columbus, OH

What certifications do travel PCU jobs require?
Most travel PCU jobs require Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Units that care for stroke patients often ask for NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) as well. A Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) credential isn't usually required, but many facilities view it as a plus.
What do facilities require for travel PCU nurses?
Facilities typically want recent progressive care, step-down, or intermediate-care experience with continuous cardiac monitoring, higher-acuity patients, and infusions such as diltiazem, amiodarone, insulin, or heparin. Depending on the unit, post-cath, cardiac, respiratory, or postoperative experience may also matter.
Is PCU the same as step-down or intermediate care?
Often, but not always. PCU, step-down, IMC, and transitional-care labels can describe similar units, but acuity, patient mix, allowed drips, and respiratory support vary by hospital. Compare the actual responsibilities with your experience rather than relying on the unit name alone.
What is different about a travel RN assignment at The James?
The James is a dedicated academic cancer hospital where nearly every inpatient service is organized around oncology care. Travelers may work with patients receiving complex surgery, chemotherapy, cellular therapy, radiation, or intensive support related to cancer treatment.
What hematology and transplant experience is available at The James?
Hematology services include acute leukemia care, blood and marrow transplantation, and cellular therapies for leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. BMT and oncology travelers may work with highly immunocompromised patients who require specialized monitoring and supportive care.
Does The James have critical-care and surgical opportunities for RNs?
Yes. Cancer surgery includes major abdominal, breast, sarcoma, robotic, and HIPEC procedures, and the hospital has a combined surgical and neurocritical-care unit. That creates opportunities for travelers whose oncology background also includes postoperative or critical-care experience.

Explore Columbus, OH

Across a sprawling central-Ohio metro, Columbus, OH is shaped by two large systems, the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital. Coverage leans on travelers to staff intensive care units and med-surg floors throughout the area. Openings frequently extend into Dublin, Westerville, and Grove City, which give clinicians practical bases and short commutes into the hospital districts. The metro keeps growing outward, which widens where a traveler can reasonably land. The flat, gridded layout and the I-270 outerbelt keep getting around simple, and after demanding stretches the Short North Arts District and the Scioto Mile trails along the river are close by. Between the academic centers and the community campuses, travelers usually have several contract options across central Ohio.
