Getting Licensed and Getting Started in Texas
What if my license is single-state and I want a Texas OR job?
You endorse into a Texas RN license through the Board of Nursing, and you start that before you start browsing. Compact privileges don't stretch to single-state holders, and residence outside the compact has the same effect. Texas is a full member, which helps most travelers and does nothing for the rest. Know which side you're on early.
What credentials move a Texas OR submission forward?
BLS is the baseline, and CNOR is preferred rather than required at most facilities. What actually decides it is service-line experience: ortho, cardiovascular, neuro, robotics, and general each read differently on a submission. Facilities generally want one to two years in the room. Say which services you've circulated and scrubbed rather than listing OR broadly.
Why do Texas OR contracts vary so much in weekly rate?
Because OR is not one job. Service line drives most of it, and the same title can mean very different work depending on the rooms involved. City and shift add to it, so two postings in one metro can land far apart. The terms attached to any one contract vary by facility and unit, and your recruiter is the fastest way to get them. The chart ranks current weekly pay by city.
What should be in hand before a Texas OR start date?
Active license or verified compact privilege, current BLS, your service-line specifics documented, references who can speak to the room, and the facility's compliance packet finished. Credentialing at larger Texas systems takes longer than travelers expect. Start the paperwork when you apply, not when you accept, and the start date holds.
Do Texas OR markets behave differently from each other?
They do. Texas runs high procedure volume across knee replacement, spinal fusion, and general surgery, but a large academic center, a suburban surgical hospital, and a regional facility staff those rooms differently. Distances matter too, since the drive between major Texas markets can cost several hours. Pick the market first, then filter.
