Oklahoma Nursing License

Oklahoma Nursing License Guide

If you already hold a multistate license, taking assignments in popular locations like Oklahoma City and Tulsa is simple since Oklahoma is a full member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. If you need a single-state license, the process is straightforward once you know where delays usually happen.

The step that slows most out-of-state applicants down is the manual background check process. Oklahoma requires state-issued RS-04 fingerprint cards rather than generic LiveScan services. This guide explains how to apply by endorsement, complete your biennial renewal, and navigate the mandatory Evidence of Status citizenship forms. Knocking out these administrative hurdles early ensures you can start your next assignment on time.

Navigating Fingerprinting & Background Checks

Oklahoma uses IdentoGO for all background checks. If you have an Oklahoma address, register online to provide electronic fingerprints at an in-state location.

Out-of-state applicants: you must request official RS-04 fingerprint cards directly from the Board. Have them rolled by a local law enforcement agency, and mail them to the IdentoGO processing center.

One thing to watch for is the timing. Do not complete your fingerprinting before you apply. Instructions and authorization codes are only released through the Nurse Portal Message Center after you submit your application and pay the fee. If your fingerprints fall outside the strict 90-day validity window, the Board will reject them and force you to repeat the process.

Getting Your Oklahoma Nursing License by Endorsement

Understanding License by Endorsement

If you already hold an active nursing license in another state, apply through licensure by endorsement. This pathway transfers your credentials to Oklahoma without making you retake the NCLEX.

Who Qualifies?

You qualify for endorsement if you hold an active, unencumbered license in another U.S. jurisdiction and pass Oklahoma’s background check standards. To get an Oklahoma multistate license, declare Oklahoma as your Primary State of Residence and provide residency documentation like a utility bill or lease.

What You’ll Need (documents & verifications)

Oklahoma RN License by Endorsement Process – Step by Step

1.) Complete and Submit the License by  Endorsement Online Application

  1. Visit the Oklahoma Nurse Portal and Submit the RN Endorsement application.

2.) Submit Verification of RN License for original state

  1.  If the state of licensure participates in Nursys, order verification electronically.
  2. If your original state does not participate in Nursys, request verification directly from that state’s board of nursing to be sent to the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.

Oklahoma Nursing License for Travel Nurses

Travel Nursing in Oklahoma

Oklahoma is a high-demand market for travelers. Most travel demand centers around Oklahoma City and Tulsa, but many assignments also come from smaller regional hospitals. Those regional roles often expect flexibility with floating and broader patient mixes compared to larger urban systems.

Because Oklahoma is a Nurse Licensure Compact member, travel nurses with an active multistate license can usually start working immediately without applying for single-state credentials. If you relocate permanently to establish Oklahoma as your primary residence, apply for licensure by endorsement. Your prior compact state license will convert to a single-state license once your residency changes.

Once your licensing is sorted out, browse our travel nursing jobs in Oklahoma to see available contracts across the state.

Pro Tip for Travelers

If relocating, start your endorsement early. Mailing mandatory RS-04 fingerprint cards adds weeks to the onboarding process. Watch your Nurse Portal Message Center for instructions and never substitute generic LiveScan services for the official cards.

Oklahoma Nursing License FAQs

Is Oklahoma a compact nursing license state?

Yes. Oklahoma is a full member of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Nurses with a multistate license from another compact state can practice in Oklahoma without a separate license.

What are the Oklahoma nursing license renewal requirements?

To renew, meet one of five continued competency qualifications within the previous two years. The most common routes are completing 520 hours of verified nursing employment or 24 contact hours of continuing education.

How do I get an Oklahoma nursing license by endorsement?

Apply through the Nurse Portal, submit a notarized Evidence of Status form, verify your original license via Nursys, and check your Message Center for instructions to complete an IdentoGO background check. Use state-issued RS-04 cards if you live out of state.

When does an Oklahoma nursing license expire?

RN and APRN licenses expire on the last day of your birth month in even-numbered years. LPN licenses expire on the last day of the birth month in odd-numbered years.

What is the Evidence of Status form in Oklahoma?

The Evidence of Status form verifies your U.S. citizenship or lawful presence. You must notarize this document and submit it to the Nurse Portal before the Board will process your application.
