X-ray pay tracks the market more than the exams: how short-staffed a site is, the local cost of living (stipends are part of the weekly total, so pricey cities post higher) and whether the schedule runs nights or weekends. Add-on modality coverage moves it too: a radiographer who can pick up CT shifts effectively prices into a different band.

It can be, once you have about a year of independent radiography behind you. Contracts assume you can run portables, the ED queue, and OR C-arm support with minimal ramp-up, so recent volume matters more than years. If your staff role skews outpatient, pick up hospital shifts first, ED and portable comfort is what travel screens test hardest. From there, the modality ladder into CT sets up naturally.

Most hospitals and travel contracts expect ARRT certification in radiography (R.T.(R)) and most states require a license or certification to practice. Specific requirements vary by state and facility. Start ARRT verification and the state application together when you shortlist a market; running them in parallel is what keeps a start date on schedule. Keep both current to avoid a start-date delay.

Travel radiographers work across emergency departments, imaging centers, and inpatient floors, with the chest X-ray among the most frequent exams. Demand is broad because X-ray is the most widely used imaging modality. Trauma-center contracts skew toward portables and overnight coverage, while imaging-center work runs scheduled and daytime, the setting sets the rhythm. Pick the rhythm that fits you before you compare rates.

It does. Plenty of contracts look for radiographers who can also cover CT or another modality, and that flexibility opens more assignments and often stronger pay. If you hold an extra ARRT credential, make it clear when you apply. Even partial CT hours on a staff role are worth listing; they signal you can flex when the schedule breaks.
