FAQs – PCU Travel Nurse Jobs Near Lexington, KY

What certifications do travel PCU jobs require?
Most travel PCU jobs require Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Units that care for stroke patients often ask for NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) as well. A Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) credential isn't usually required, but many facilities view it as a plus.
What do facilities require for travel PCU nurses?
Facilities typically want recent progressive care, step-down, or intermediate-care experience with continuous cardiac monitoring, higher-acuity patients, and infusions such as diltiazem, amiodarone, insulin, or heparin. Depending on the unit, post-cath, cardiac, respiratory, or postoperative experience may also matter.
Is PCU the same as step-down or intermediate care?
Often, but not always. PCU, step-down, IMC, and transitional-care labels can describe similar units, but acuity, patient mix, allowed drips, and respiratory support vary by hospital. Compare the actual responsibilities with your experience rather than relying on the unit name alone.
What kind of trauma acuity will RNs see at UK Chandler Hospital?
Chandler is an ACS-verified Level I trauma center — one of only two in Kentucky and the only one serving central and eastern Kentucky — feeding what UK calls the area's busiest emergency department. RNs see the region's highest-acuity trauma, stroke, and critical-care cases.
Which programs drive some of the most complex nursing care at UK Chandler?
Solid-organ and bone-marrow transplant programs, the Gill Heart & Vascular Institute, and the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute concentrate many of the hospital’s highest-complexity cases. Travelers with transplant, cardiac, neuro, or critical-care experience may find a strong match with these service lines.
What EMR will a travel PCU RN use at the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital?
UK HealthCare uses Epic for electronic health records and clinical documentation. Travelers who have worked in Epic before may be able to transition into the hospital’s documentation workflows more quickly.
