What certifications do travel PCU jobs require?
Most travel PCU jobs require Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Units that care for stroke patients often ask for NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) as well. A Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) credential isn't usually required, but many facilities view it as a plus.
What do facilities require for travel PCU nurses?
Facilities typically want recent progressive care, step-down, or intermediate-care experience with continuous cardiac monitoring, higher-acuity patients, and infusions such as diltiazem, amiodarone, insulin, or heparin. Depending on the unit, post-cath, cardiac, respiratory, or postoperative experience may also matter.
Is PCU the same as step-down or intermediate care?
Often, but not always. PCU, step-down, IMC, and transitional-care labels can describe similar units, but acuity, patient mix, allowed drips, and respiratory support vary by hospital. Compare the actual responsibilities with your experience rather than relying on the unit name alone.
As North Carolina's first Level III trauma center, what acuity will travel nurses see at Atrium Health Cleveland in Shelby?
A 241-bed community hospital with North Carolina's first Level III Trauma Center, Atrium Health Cleveland runs a 24/7 emergency department with Chest Pain Center accreditation and Carolinas Stroke Network access.
What orthopedic and surgical caseload will travel nurses find at Atrium Health Cleveland?
Its Joint Academy handles hip, knee, and shoulder replacement with robotic-assisted surgery, and the hospital charts on Epic — ortho and joint-replacement work for OR and med-surg travelers.
What heart and cancer care does Atrium Cleveland offer travel nurses?
Heart care runs through Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute with cardiac rehabilitation, alongside cancer care in partnership with Levine Cancer Institute.

Explore Shelby, NC

Shelby, NC pairs a walkable center and deep musical roots with a smaller but active clinical setting built on medical-surgical units and surgical suites. Atrium Health Cleveland anchors the local footprint, providing core services to the greater Cleveland County region with a community-based patient flow drawn largely from the surrounding towns. Because the area's healthcare networks overlap, assignments often open in nearby Gastonia and Kings Mountain, letting clinicians compare nearby contracts without a major relocation. Downtime usually means a stop at the Earl Scruggs Center or a walk along the Broad River Greenway. For a small western-Piedmont market, the overlap of regional networks is what gives travelers more than one option close to home.
