FAQs – ICU Travel Nurse Jobs Near Albany, NY

What certifications do travel ICU jobs require?
Most travel ICU jobs require Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS). Neuro and stroke units commonly add NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and pediatric or mixed units may ask for PALS. The CCRN credential is preferred by many facilities and required by a few.
Will I float on a travel ICU assignment?
It depends on the facility and the contract. ICU travelers may float to PCU, step-down, ER holds, or other critical care areas, while some hospitals limit floating more narrowly. Float expectations are not always visible in the posting, so confirm the policy before accepting an assignment.
What experience is required for travel ICU RN jobs?
Most travel ICU RN jobs require recent critical care experience caring for high-acuity patients and independently managing ventilators, vasoactive drips, sedation, and invasive lines. Some units may also look for experience with CRRT, IABP, Impella, ECMO, or other advanced therapies. Requirements vary by ICU type, so facilities typically want your recent experience to closely match the patient population, devices, and level of care on the assignment.
Does a multistate license work for this New York travel assignment?
No—New York is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so an out-of-state multistate license doesn’t cover this assignment; you’ll need an active New York RN license and current registration. Apply for licensure by endorsement through the NYSED Office of the Professions, and plan for New York’s required child-abuse-reporting and infection-control coursework unless an exemption applies. Our New York Nursing License Guide has current fees, timelines, and step-by-step instructions.
What's the trauma and academic setting like for travel nurses at Albany Medical Center in Albany?
Northeastern New York's only Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and only academic medical center, Albany Medical Center runs an emergency department seeing more than 75,000 visits a year.
What critical-care and stroke acuity will travel nurses find at Albany Medical Center?
It's a DNV-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center with a dedicated Neuro ICU. Travelers may also see medical, surgical, vascular, and cardiothoracic critical care, and the hospital charts on Epic.
