Complete Your PT Education
Colorado accepts graduates of CAPTE-accredited programs and applicants whose education the Board determines is substantially equivalent. For a physical therapist, the accredited entry-level pathway is a Doctor of Physical Therapy program.
Pass the NPTE
FSBPT administers the National Physical Therapy Examination on fixed national dates. Colorado applicants must apply through FSBPT and meet its current eligibility and retake rules. A licensure-by-examination applicant generally must graduate and pass the NPTE within the two years immediately before applying, unless the Board approves another competency showing case by case.
Apply Through DPO Online Services
Colorado takes applications in DPO Online Services. The current fee is displayed in the portal during submission rather than listed as a fixed amount on the Board's public application page. Required supporting records are submitted as directed in the application and may arrive on separate schedules.
Submit Fingerprints for the Background Check
Colorado requires applicants to submit fingerprints for criminal-history information from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the FBI. Use a Division-approved vendor and follow the profession-specific instructions linked from the Board's application page.

Colorado PT License Fees and Where They Appear
Colorado does not list one fixed initial-license or renewal fee on the Physical Therapy Board's public application page. DPO Online Services displays the amount that applies when you complete the transaction. Because the Director may set or change these fees, use the portal amount rather than an unofficial figure.
You may not know the exact Board fee until the portal displays it. Colorado does publish the $95 PT Compact privilege total, including the $50 state fee and $45 Commission fee.
Colorado publishes the statewide renewal deadline, continuing professional competency requirements, and the full cost of a Compact privilege. The Board does not publish a separate public fee ladder by length of lapse.

How to Get a Colorado PT License by Endorsement
Colorado's endorsement route is available to an applicant with a current, unrestricted PT license in good standing from another jurisdiction. The Board applies Colorado's Occupational Credential Portability Program and may decline an application if the applicant lacks substantially equivalent education, experience, or credentials, or has conduct that would support discipline.

- • FCCPT Credential Review and Education Equivalence report if you are foreign-trained or graduated from a non-CAPTE program
Working While Your Application Is Pending
A pending endorsement application does not authorize practice in Colorado. A provisional PT license is a separate, one-time pathway for an applicant who completed qualifying education and practices under a Colorado-licensed PT. It expires no later than 120 days after issuance and cannot be renewed or reinstated. Do not begin practice until the Board issues the full license or you hold an active Compact privilege.
On Timing
Colorado publishes no total processing timeframe for endorsement review. Request every required verification and complete fingerprinting when you apply, then monitor DPO Online Services for deficiencies or Board requests. Do not set a start date based on an unofficial estimate.
Colorado PT License Renewal
Colorado PT license renewal is a two-year cycle with a single statewide expiration date: October 31st of an even year. Nothing about it depends on when you were born or when you were first licensed. Physical therapy license renewal in Colorado is therefore a statewide event rather than an individual one, landing in the same week for every licensee in the state.
Earn 30 Continuing Professional Competency Hours
Colorado requires 30 continuing professional competency hours for each two-year cycle. Under the standard professional-development route you complete a self-assessment, build a learning plan, and earn 30 hours tied to that plan, with at least 20 of the 30 from educational coursework, a fellowship, or a residency. Colorado mandates no specific subject: no ethics hour, no jurisprudence module, no legislatively required topic.
Complete the Renewal in DPO Online Services
Renewal runs through DPO Online Services. The Division's general guidance says the renewal link appears when a license enters its renewal period, about four to five weeks before expiration. Use the portal and Board notices for the opening date of the current cycle.
Keep Your Records for the Cycle
Hold your competency documentation and your renewal confirmation together, because the Division audits a share of licensees after the renewal period closes and the total is yours to substantiate.
If Your Colorado License Has Expired
Renewal keeps an active license current. Once a Colorado PT license expires, the licensee must stop practicing and apply for reinstatement through DPO Online Services. The Director sets the reinstatement fee, but the Board does not publish a public fee ladder by length of lapse.
Colorado PT Compact Privileges
Colorado issues compact privileges today, and for an eligible PT from a member home state a privilege may replace a separate Colorado license application altogether. A privilege authorizes practice here on the strength of the license you hold at home, and it lives and dies with that license rather than standing on its own.
