MOBILE endorsement applicants instead pay FSBPT's $90 score-transfer fee. Electronic fingerprinting is required before any initial license can be approved. How to Get a PT License in Florida

How to get a physical therapy license in Florida depends on your route. Examination applicants complete the national exam path plus the Florida Laws and Rules Exam, electronic fingerprinting, and the Board's review. MOBILE endorsement applicants follow a separate license-verification and score-transfer process. No compact privilege applies.

Temporary permit, narrow scope. Florida's permit is limited to eligible examination-track graduates of approved U.S. programs. It lasts six months from graduation and requires direct supervision by a qualified Florida PT, proof of malpractice insurance, and passage of the Florida Laws and Rules Exam. The Florida Physical Therapy Laws and Rules Exam

Florida requires examination-track applicants to pass the Florida Laws and Rules Examination in addition to the NPTE. The exam covers the state's physical therapy practice act and Board rules. It also applies to eligible temporary-permit applicants. The Board's current MOBILE endorsement requirements and fee list do not include this exam.

Plan it like any other examination-route application item. The exam fee is $65, paid directly to FSBPT, and the Board instructs applicants to register with FSBPT for the NPTE and the Florida Laws and Rules Exam during the application process. The exam must be passed before an examination-route license or temporary permit can issue.

How to Get a Florida PT License by Endorsement

Florida's endorsement route is MOBILE, and eligibility is a defined test rather than a formality: an active, unencumbered license, a qualifying examination record, and at least two years of active practice during the preceding four are the core conditions, with the board's current MOBILE application controlling the complete test. What this section can do is help you build the file.

Screening is not a MOBILE add-on: Florida requires electronic fingerprinting on every route at initial licensure, and since July 1st, 2025, a clear background screening is checked again at each renewal, using your retained prints while they remain valid. Book the initial fingerprints the same week you open the application.

The Board asks MOBILE applicants to allow up to 10 business days for initial review. Once every requirement is met, Florida law requires the license to be issued to a qualified MOBILE applicant within 7 days. These are separate checkpoints, not a single start-to-finish estimate. Request every third-party record when you open the file, and treat a start date as firm only when your Florida license is verifiable.

Florida PT license renewal runs every 2 years, and current licenses expire at midnight Eastern Time on November 30th. Physical therapy license renewal in Florida requires the renewal application, the applicable fee, required CE reported through CE Broker, and a completed background screening or retained fingerprints.

Restoring a lapse

If Your Florida License Has Expired

Florida does not run its lapse ladder on a single calendar clock. An unrenewed license is placed in delinquent status and, left unresolved, eventually becomes null and void. The fee and requirements depend on the status shown in the Board’s system when you act, not on how you count the days yourself.

Stop practicing first. Practicing on an expired license is unlicensed practice, even by a day, even mid-assignment. If your license lapses while you are working, tell your employer and stop treating patients until it is restored.

Florida is not a PT compact member. A privilege issued elsewhere cannot authorize practice in Florida, and a Florida home-state license cannot support privileges in member states while Florida remains a non-member.

Submitting the application doesn't make the file complete. The Florida board waits on records from schools, FSBPT, other state boards, the screening result, and you, and the file waits with it.

Florida is a non-member state, which sets the travel planning rule: there is no privilege to bridge you in, so the licensing lead time is the part of the schedule you control. Three habits protect your start dates.

Start Early

If Florida is on your shortlist at all, open the license file before a recruiter calls, and don't count on a shortcut appearing while it runs. Starting early gives the exam result, the screening, and every outside record more time to reach the file before anyone needs an answer.

Plan Past the Initial Review

Use the checkpoint for your route, not the general 30-day review rule, as your planning reference. MOBILE applications list up to 10 business days for initial review and issuance within 7 days after all requirements are met; temporary-permit applications list a 15-day review. None is a complete application-to-start estimate because outside records, screening, exam results, deficiency responses, and facility credentialing add their own time.

Put November 30th on the Calendar in Odd Years

Florida’s expiration date is fixed and statewide. If a contract crosses that deadline in an odd year, plan for the renewal, the CE required for your license, and the background screening or fingerprint-retention requirement. Most licensees need 24 CE hours, including 2 hours in prevention of medical errors, with no more than 12 hours completed through home study. Licensees issued a license during the second half of the biennium follow the Board’s reduced first-renewal requirements.

A Florida license gives you legal authority to practice. Your employer and the facility still run verification, compliance documents, screening, competencies, and onboarding, and that credentialing has a timeline of its own.
