SLP pay leans on hard-to-staff markets and higher-cost cities (stipends are part of the weekly total, so expensive areas post more) plus an off-shift premium where a setting carries one. Setting matters as much as geography: skilled-nursing and acute contracts often post above school roles, though school assignments trade rate for a calendar with breaks built in.

Scope and independence. An SLP evaluates, diagnoses, sets the plan of care, and handles dysphagia and complex cases; an SLP assistant delivers treatment within that plan under supervision, with rules that vary sharply by state. Travel contracts are posted separately, screen for different credentials, and pay on different scales. Facilities in assistant-friendly states sometimes pair the two, but an SLPA contract never substitutes for the independent caseload an SLP role assumes.

Most roles require a master's degree, state licensure, and usually ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP). Specific requirements vary by state and setting, especially for school-based work. School roles can also require a state education credential on top, so confirm both licenses early, the education paperwork often runs slower than the health-department license. Build both timelines into your start-date plan.

Travel SLPs work in schools, hospitals, outpatient clinics, and skilled-nursing facilities, pediatric speech and language on one side, adult communication and swallowing rehab on the other. The setting on each posting shapes the caseload. Decide which side of that split you want before you search; the adult-rehab and pediatric boards move on different rhythms and rarely interchange mid-contract.

Most travel roles want the full CCC-SLP, since assignments expect you to work independently from day one. Some settings will take a clinician in their Clinical Fellowship with the right supervision, but options are narrower, once you have your Cs, the board opens up. Plan the CF year strategically: a supervised staff role in the setting you want to travel in later makes that first contract much easier to land.
