FAQs – ER Travel Nurse Jobs Near Oakland, CA

What certifications are required for this ER travel job?
Most travel ER jobs require BLS and ACLS. TNCC may be required for trauma care. Pediatric requirements can include PALS, ENPC, or both, depending on whether the facility accepts ENPC in place of PALS. Confirm the required combination before booking a course or renewing credentials.
What recent experience do facilities look for in travel ER nurses?
Facilities typically look for recent emergency department experience caring for a wide range of acuity levels, from lower-acuity patients to unstable patients who may need rapid intervention. Trauma exposure, critical care skills, pediatric experience, and triage experience can all matter depending on the department. The strongest match is usually a recent ER background that reflects the patient volume, acuity, and responsibilities of the assignment.
What types of patients do travel ER nurses typically care for?
Travel ER nurses may care for patients with medical emergencies, injuries, behavioral health needs, cardiac or respiratory conditions, and patients awaiting admission to another unit. Some departments also manage ventilated patients or titratable drips while patients wait for an ICU bed. Patient mix and acuity vary by hospital, so travelers should compare the department’s typical population with their recent experience.
Will my multistate nursing license cover this California travel assignment?
No—California is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so a multistate license from another state doesn’t authorize practice here; you’ll need an active California RN license. Apply for licensure by endorsement through the California Board of Registered Nursing and plan ahead—eligible endorsement applicants may also apply for a temporary license while the permanent application is pending. Our California Nursing License Guide has current fees, timelines, and step-by-step instructions.

Licensing in California

Single-state license required. California is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so you'll need a state-specific license. Our licensing team handles endorsement and renewals for you. See the California Licensing Center →

Explore Oakland, CA

For the communities ringing San Francisco Bay, Oakland, CA works as a clinical center. Highland Hospital and Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center carry much of the area's hospital care, drawing travel coverage into surgical suites and the ICU for a diverse patient population. Berkeley and Alameda make practical bases for shorter commutes into Oakland's hospital districts. BART handles much of the Berkeley and wider East Bay commute, while ferry service covers some Alameda and cross-bay trips. When the workday ends, many nurses walk the path around Lake Merritt or take in the galleries near the Oakland Museum of California. The East Bay gives travelers several nearby housing options without committing to a downtown address.
