FAQs – ER Travel Nurse Jobs Near Palo Alto, CA

What certifications are required for this ER travel job?
Most travel ER jobs require BLS and ACLS. TNCC may be required for trauma care. Pediatric requirements can include PALS, ENPC, or both, depending on whether the facility accepts ENPC in place of PALS. Confirm the required combination before booking a course or renewing credentials.
What recent experience do facilities look for in travel ER nurses?
Facilities typically look for recent emergency department experience caring for a wide range of acuity levels, from lower-acuity patients to unstable patients who may need rapid intervention. Trauma exposure, critical care skills, pediatric experience, and triage experience can all matter depending on the department. The strongest match is usually a recent ER background that reflects the patient volume, acuity, and responsibilities of the assignment.
What types of patients do travel ER nurses typically care for?
Travel ER nurses may care for patients with medical emergencies, injuries, behavioral health needs, cardiac or respiratory conditions, and patients awaiting admission to another unit. Some departments also manage ventilated patients or titratable drips while patients wait for an ICU bed. Patient mix and acuity vary by hospital, so travelers should compare the department’s typical population with their recent experience.
Will my multistate nursing license cover this California travel assignment?
No—California is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so a multistate license from another state doesn’t authorize practice here; you’ll need an active California RN license. Apply for licensure by endorsement through the California Board of Registered Nursing and plan ahead—eligible endorsement applicants may also apply for a temporary license while the permanent application is pending. Our California Nursing License Guide has current fees, timelines, and step-by-step instructions.
What type of patient acuity can travel RNs expect at Stanford Hospital?
Stanford is a Magnet academic medical center with Level I trauma, Comprehensive Stroke Center services, transplant, oncology, cardiovascular, and neuroscience care. Travelers may work with complex tertiary and quaternary patients referred for highly specialized treatment.
How are Stanford's critical-care units organized?
Stanford has distinct medical, surgical/trauma, and neuroscience ICUs, allowing nurses to work within specialized high-acuity populations. Assignments may involve severe medical illness, major surgery, trauma, or complex neurological disease.

California’s hospital communities range from major academic medical districts to regional centers serving the Central Valley. Los Angeles and San Francisco combine teaching hospitals with community hospitals; inland, Fresno provides care for a broad agricultural region. A travel nurse’s everyday surroundings can change considerably between these areas. Los Angeles spreads across distinct neighborhoods with food and music from around the world. San Francisco fits its waterfront streets and commercial districts onto a compact peninsula, where a ferry ride makes the bay part of an afternoon out. Fresno offers another kind of city life: its Tower District has live music and film screenings in a historic theater, with the valley’s farming towns beyond the city.
