What Travelers Ask Before Applying in California
Do I need a California license for ER travel jobs?
Yes, without exception. California has never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a multistate or compact license authorizes nothing here regardless of where else you are licensed. Every traveler applies to the Board of Registered Nursing directly, and California issues no temporary permits, which removes the shortcut other states offer. Apply before you shortlist contracts, not after you accept one.
Which certifications do California ER postings ask for?
BLS and ACLS are the baseline. PALS applies where the department takes pediatric patients rather than everywhere, so an adult-only or specialty center may never ask for it. TNCC is preferred at higher-volume and trauma departments. California runs a licensed-nurse ratio of one to four in emergency departments under Title 22, which shapes the unit but not your credential list.
Why does ER pay vary across California cities?
Cost of living is part of it, but the bigger driver is how hard the opening is to fill. A department several hours from a large labor pool prices differently than one in Los Angeles or San Diego. Shift and contract length matter too. The chart on this page ranks live weekly pay by California city, which is the only current answer.
How long should I plan for California licensing?
Longer than you want, and longer than most other states. The Board of Registered Nursing processes endorsement applications on its own schedule, and fingerprinting and transcript verification add to it. Travelers who apply early get to choose contracts; travelers who apply after finding one wait. Start the application now and browse while it runs.
Where in California are ER contracts concentrated?
Los Angeles, San Diego, and the Sacramento region post the most on volume alone, but California is long and the northern and inland markets run consistent openings with thinner competition. A 2024 BRN survey counted tens of thousands of active-license California RNs not working in nursing, which is part of why demand persists. Filter by radius from a realistic home base.
