Explore Fort Dodge, IA

Gypsum mining built Fort Dodge, IA into an industrial town, and the wallboard plants and quarries still help drive the economy of this Webster County seat on the Des Moines River. Hospital labs and imaging centers are where a fair share of the allied caseload lands in what serves as a regional hub for north-central Iowa. US-20 runs east and west as a four-lane route, meeting I-35 near Williams to the east, while US-169 heads north and south. As the largest city in this part of the state, Fort Dodge keeps more of its own medical, retail, and distribution base than the smaller county seats nearby. Des Moines lies about ninety miles southeast for a major airport, while rail lines and farm traffic keep the freight moving through town year-round.
