New York ER Contracts: Licensing First

Do I need a New York license for ER travel jobs?
For now, yes. New York enacted compact legislation, but it hasn't been implemented, so a multistate license doesn't authorize you to work here yet. You'll need a New York license by endorsement through the State Education Department's Office of the Professions. Enacted and in effect are different things, and this one trips up a lot of people.
What certifications do New York ER jobs require?
You'll need BLS and ACLS. PALS if the department treats kids. TNCC helps at the trauma centers, and every New York trauma center holds its level through American College of Surgeons verification, so the standards are consistent statewide. An adult Level I here treats at least 1,200 injured patients a year. Expect a recent year or two in the ER.
Why does ER pay change so much across New York?
The state is really several job markets. What a hospital pays depends on how many nurses live nearby and how long the job's been open, and upstate has a very different answer to that than the city does. The chart above ranks live weekly pay by city, which is more useful than any assumption about New York City leading.
Where's the ER work outside New York City?
Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Albany all anchor their own systems, and the state trauma registry pulls data from every verified center across all of them. Upstate is a long way from the city in every sense, including the job market. Decide which part of New York you actually want to live in before you filter anything.
How much lead time do I need for a New York ER start?
However long the Office of the Professions takes, plus the hospital's credentialing. That's the honest answer while the compact isn't live, and no multistate license shortens it. Get the application in before you shortlist jobs. Everything after that depends on the hospital and the unit, and your recruiter will take it from there.
