A cath lab tech, or cardiovascular technologist, assists with diagnostic and interventional heart procedures: angiograms, stent placements, and cardiac catheterizations. The job means prepping the sterile field, running imaging and fluoroscopy, monitoring hemodynamics, and supporting the physician through scheduled and emergent cases. Between cases the tech restocks, checks inventory, and preps for STEMI activations, so the rhythm alternates between scheduled precision and full-speed emergencies.

Most look for the RCIS, the Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist credential from Cardiovascular Credentialing International, plus BLS and usually ACLS. Documented cath lab and interventional experience carries as much weight as the credential itself. If your RCIS is in progress, documented interventional case volume can still qualify you for many labs; finishing the credential unlocks the rest.

Travel pay tracks the market more than the case mix. The main drivers are how short-staffed the lab is, the local cost of living, your housing and meal stipends are part of the weekly total, so pricier cities tend to post higher, and the shift, since nights, weekends, and call rotations pay more than day schedules. Most assignments are in hospital-based interventional cardiology labs and teaching hospitals, with some in outpatient cardiovascular centers. Call structure and procedure mix vary by site, so the setting shapes the day-to-day workload more than the city does. Teaching hospitals add structural-heart and research cases to the mix, while community labs run leaner teams where each tech covers more ground.

They are related but distinct. A cath lab tech (RCIS) works invasive coronary and structural procedures; an EP tech (RCES) works the electrophysiology lab on ablations and device implants; and a cardiac sonographer (RCS) performs echocardiograms, which is non-invasive imaging. All three are CCI credentials, and some techs cross-train, but contracts hire for one role.

Usually, yes. Most interventional cath labs run STEMI call, so contracts often specify a call rotation for nights, weekends, or holidays alongside the regular schedule. The listing spells out the call expectation, and heavier call typically comes with added differentials. If you can't take call, filter those contracts out early rather than negotiating after an offer; most STEMI programs can't waive it.

Documented interventional case volume comes first: labs want techs who have scrubbed, monitored, and circulated across diagnostic and interventional cases, usually with a year or two of recent lab time. Comfort with STEMI pace matters as much as the count, since travelers join the call rotation quickly. An active RCIS strengthens everything, and a concise case log (procedure types, roles, volumes) is the fastest way through the screen.
