CVOR Surgical Tech Travel Jobs

Most travel CVOR assignments expect the CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) from the NBSTSA, the most nationally recognized surgical-technology credential, paired with documented open-heart case experience, since the cardiac OR runs at high acuity with little room for orientation. If your CST is current but your recent cases are general surgery, expect programs to screen hard on the cardiac history specifically.

A CVOR tech is a surgical technologist who specializes in cardiac surgery. The role centers on scrubbing open-chest cases like coronary bypass and valve repair, preparing the sterile field, passing instruments, and keeping the OR moving through long, high-stakes procedures. Long pump runs also mean stamina and sterile discipline get screened as carefully as the skills list.

Because the skill is scarce. CVOR already sits high for surgical-tech work, and beyond that the rate follows staffing pressure, the city's cost of living (stipends are part of the weekly total) and shift, with nights, weekends, and call paying above days. Since few techs carry current open-heart case logs, heavy-call cardiac programs are consistently the strongest-paying corner of the surgical-tech board.

Cardiac surgery volume keeps CVOR demand steady, about 200,000 CABG operations are performed in the U.S. each year. Because the cardiac OR needs techs who can scrub heart cases without a ramp-up, programs lean on experienced travelers to keep rooms running. Valve programs and growing structural-heart lines add cases on top of that base, so the demand floor keeps rising.

Most programs want documented open-heart case experience (bypass and valve cases especially) because the cardiac OR has little room to train a traveler up. Be ready to show recent CVOR case history; a general surgical-tech background alone usually isn't enough. A clean case log with dates and roles moves a CVOR application faster than any cover note.

Specialization and stakes. Both roles hold the CST and share sterile technique, but a CVOR tech scrubs open-chest cardiac cases (bypass, valves, sometimes transplant support) where instrument sequences, cannulation steps, and pump coordination are unforgiving. General surgical techs rotate across broader, shorter case mixes. The cardiac lane pays more and travels well, but programs require documented heart cases before they'll put a traveler in the room.
