What to Expect

NICU nurses specialize in caring for newborns who require intensive medical attention, often due to premature birth, low birth weight, infections, or congenital conditions. They monitor vital signs, administer medications, support feeding, and provide critical care. NICU nurses work closely with neonatologists and families to ensure optimal outcomes during a newborn’s most vulnerable stage.

Certifications

NICU nurses typically require the following certifications:

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
• STABLE Program Certification – for post-resuscitation care of sick newborns
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – sometimes required for higher-level NICUs

Education

NICU nurses must earn an Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ADN or BSN) from an accredited program. After passing the NCLEX-RN exam and obtaining licensure, specialized NICU training or prior pediatric experience is often preferred. Some NICU nurses pursue certification as a Neonatal Nurse (RNC-NIC) to advance their skills and career opportunities.
