Certifications

Labor and Delivery Nurses typically require the following certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

Education

L&D nurses must earn an Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ADN or BSN) and pass the NCLEX-RN to obtain licensure. Many employers prefer nurses with prior OB/GYN or women’s health experience. Additional certifications such as NRP or Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) are often encouraged or required in hospital-based labor and delivery units.
