They monitor fetal and maternal health, assist during labor, manage complications, and support families through the birthing process. Labor and Delivery Nurses typically require the following certifications:
L&D nurses must earn an Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ADN or BSN) and pass the NCLEX-RN to obtain licensure. Many employers prefer nurses with prior OB/GYN or women’s health experience. Additional certifications such as NRP or Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) are often encouraged or required in hospital-based labor and delivery units.
